IH's back was already broken by that point. The change from the 360 to the 358 was almost certainly a cost-saving measure, a vain attempt to come back from the brink. Either the 358 was cheaper to procure, or IH had a huge stockpile of them laying around somewhere. They used it in the 3088 too, if I'm not mistaken. My suspicion is that they had a whole bunch of German diesels piled up in a warehouse. Dad states it as fact, but you know how rumors become "facts" when they've been restated enough times... Gotta put my vote in for the 360.
