To replace a TA in a 460 you need to do both splits in the tractor and that it is a detail oriented and time consuming process to rebuild a TA from scratch. I strongly suggest that you get an IT shop manual and make the decision for yourself. If you use both the tractor and the TA a lot, it may be worth it to you to fix it, especially if you are mechanically able to do it yourself. As far as the comment Harley1983 made about more IH’s running with the TA than with it working may well be true, but that you will not do any more damage I question if you are hearing a continuous noise from the TA. Normally what happens is the rollers in the one-way over-running clutch wear flat and just won’t hold. You pull the TA and it won’t hold, might make a whining noise, but nothing else. Running a tractor with the symptoms I just described more than likely won’t do any more damage. From what you are describing, it is possible that the roller housing for the over-running clutch or another piece in the TA may have broken and these pieces may be floating around getting into bearings etc and can possibly cause damage. Keep in mind that the TA, rear end, and hydraulic system all use the same oil, so anything that may have broken in the TA might find its way into the rest of the system. I’m not sure that I’d want to take that chance.

The garden was already sprouting when we hooked up the mid-mount shovel cultivators to the Pony. The seed bed was soft enough that the rear end would spin and slowly work its way to the downhill side of the gardens slight incline. From this, we learned our lesson sinc
