The EXACT thing happened to me...cept for the dead battery.
After it rained 6 inches, went out to start my 300. It ran for a few seconds then died. I then spent most of saturday doing all the right things:dried out the distributor, checked for spark etc etc.
Then I happened to look at the sediment bowl. Guess what? It was full of water. Drained the sediment bowl, drained the carb, let some gas run thru...and VOILA! It fired right off and purred like a kitten.
I always forget to check the simplest things first.
