Red - I doubt the old brushes are copper. I recently replaced worn brushes in my Super H starter. Both the worn out and the new replacement brushes are made of a sort of copper-colored material. They seem about as soft as plain carbon brushes - suspect they're made of sintered graphite and copper powder.

Anyway suggest taking the old brushes to your friendly local starter/alternator shop. The one near me had new brushes in stock for $6 a set.
