Starting Motor Brushes

The H (Deco-Remy) starter seemed to hit a dead spot on the armature this weekend and with a charged battery would just grunt, no spin. Tearing it down I found the brushes worn, one to the brush anchor screw. These brushes are copper. Of the 16 Delco-Remy starters I have, this one is the first with copper brushes. Can I use the graphite type instead for the rebuild? The brush type has a mounting hole at the top instead of the attached wire. Maybe this type requires the copper to stand up to the torque of the anchor screw?
