super C ignition short?

One of my Cs has developed a problem starting. The battery tests okay, but lacks enough current to turn the starter. (Yes, the lights are off.) Adding a 12volt marine battery spins the starter, however the bolt holding the positive ground literally turns bright orange and the cables smoke. Testing with just the 6 volt battery and a multimeter shows a normal 7 volts, until the start switch is pulled out. The voltage then drops to two volts. With a 12 volt battery the drop is from 12 volts to 5. This is before the starter ring is pulled. Something in the ON OFF switch circuit is eating the battery juice. Because the bolt turned orange I suspected the bolt was the resistor, but replacing it made no difference. Does anyone have a suggestion as to where the current is going?
