super C ignition short?

One of my Cs has developed a problem starting. The battery tests okay, but lacks enough current to turn the starter. (Yes, the lights are off.) Adding a 12volt marine battery spins the starter, however the bolt holding the positive ground literally turns bright orange and the cables smoke. Testing with just the 6 volt battery and a multimeter shows a normal 7 volts, until the start switch is pulled out. The voltage then drops to two volts. With a 12 volt battery the drop is from 12 volts to 5. This is before the starter ring is pulled. Something in the ON OFF switch circuit is eating the battery juice. Because the bolt turned orange I suspected the bolt was the resistor, but replacing it made no difference. Does anyone have a suggestion as to where the current is going?

The voltage on the 12 volt battery dropping to 5 volts indicates the starter is drawing to much current either from a bad starter, a short or to much load on the starter.

Replace the ground cable and clean the attachment area down to bare, clean metal.

It sounds like you have a poor connection there, rather than a short. If you had a short, there would be high current flow through both battery cables, and both ends of both cables would be heating up. Since there is only this one point in the system that's heating, it sounds like there is a poor connection at that point.

Yup. That was it. Thanks. Pulled the area apart. The bolt holding the ground wasn"t firm. Somehow the nut at the bottom of the hole was semi stripped. Further complication was shown when I pulled and (just for the heck of it) checked the resistance on the scorched bolt with an Ohm meter. Over 2,000,000 ohms. That bolt that glowed orange WAS acting as a resister. [Puzzled as to what happened, as all had worked well on the tractor this spring. Must be like when a circuit breaker suddenly goes bad in a utility room and fire results.] Threw the burnt bolt away. Wire brushed everything clean. Retapped the hole (3/8 x 16 for those curious) installed a new bolt (about .2 ohms this time). Discovered a mouse nest by the gauges (there is a 3/4 inch inspection type hole in the bottom of the switch and gauge box put there for an unknown purpose as it"s position over the main transmission shaft bell housing makes inspection through the hole unlikely). Removed the nest and noticed the insulation on the wire from the generator to the amp meter was observed to be melted free of the wire at the amp meter and down for about 4" (not surprising with enough current flowing to make a 3/8" wide bolt with a 9/16" head glow orange white), so I replaced that wire too. Put it all together (changed the oils and greased all the zerks while I was at it), and it started right up like nothing was ever wrong. Bushogged 6 acres of grass which was level with my eyes while I was seated on the Super C immediatly. Ran out of gas (knew I forgot something). Refilled and did two more acres before the sun set.
