Farmall M block with no serial numbers or ID stamp

I have an early 1940 farmall m with no stamping on the id area of the block. The only id numbers are DJ 4 and 425 W, (which are cast into the block) but there are no stamped numbers. They are not worn off, just blank. Is this a replacement block from the dealership? I know MOPAR did this in the 60"s. Is this some kind of power unit block? Also, it has a cover on the left side of the block below the carburater where there is a plate. My other blocks do not have this plate, but have a smooth casting in the same place. What is this for?...thanks, Andy
