Normally, (95%)of operators just used two bolts to hold the swinger drawbar in place. The bar was normally placed under the U shaped bar and the strap was bolted onto the swinger bar and supported the swinger. Several wear points could be experienced; both sides of the swinger and or strap where the loose bolts rested and another was the hole in the mounting end of the swinger would become elongated over time giving you the forward and backward movement you described. There was an aftermarket (I believe) clamp or horseshoe looking part that was used in place of the two common bolts and I'm sure many farmers made their own out of scrap iron to keep the swinger where they wanted it.
