Those old local farmers were not joking with you. If you go to a nursing home in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, or anywhere else there are old retired farmers, you will find old men with mangled or missing limbs. The snapping rolls (the ones near the front) get plugged, and someone reaching down to pull the stalks out gets pulled into the rolls. It happens in a heartbeat.
