Need some help putting a Live pump on a M

I am going to put a live pump on my 49 M soon and have a question about how to install it. I am going to use a IH pump and change out the front cover. When I am ready to install it do I put the number one cly. on TDC ? When I take the spacer out and install the pump is there some way to tell that I have the teeth lined up right so it will still be in time. I have never had a spacer out to see how it went.
