I think that gene b has the best approach. You do not need "very much" or "very deep" threads since the pipe threads are tapered. Just run the pipe tape in just enough to cut "some" new threads or part of threads and then coat both the inside threads in the manifold and the external threads on the threaded "pipe" with a good "muffler/exhaust pipe compound" install and let set (dry) for a few days before running the tractor. Idle and let it warm up slow the first time. Just my opinion, but I think this is MUCH SAFER than trying to press fit a ring in the manifold. These things get HOT. Hope what ever you decide to do works good for you.
