I have found over the years end play from bearings on that worm shaft and the keyways for the half gear and steering control arm are single biggest cause for loose play in steering. Very few of these are worn enough in actual worm and teeth of the gear to create serious problems.

Another item to save you a bit of grief is rather than use gear oil when done. Put a zerk in the oil drain and pump in grease until it comes out top fill hole. In that way you know box is full of grease and any added from that point will go to gear and worm. Very few people have ever stopped these from leaking oil, for very long.
