Jim...I replaced the generator on my Super A with a 12 Volt one wire alt (10SI) last fall and I ran into a similar problem. With the first alt I installed...it "turned on" OK for a few days and then it began to be harder and harder to turn on. I had to rev the engine all the way up and finally it stopped turing on altogether. I took the alt back to the store and they gave me another, but that alt also only turned on if I reved the engine high. I did not want to put in a push button or oil gauge, or live with having to remember to rev the engine, so went over to ebay and bought a new internal regulator for the alt that turns the alt on a LOW engine rev. That solved my problem and I'm now very happy with the alt set-up. Cost me about $20 bucks for that special internal regulator and installation was easy. The prime reason I wanted to replace the generatorin in the first place was to get away from the unreliable point type regulators used with generators. (to bad no one sells just a solid state generator regulator replacement). Pete
