I suspect that the air is the limiting factor here as you do. Since there's no way to increase the air getting to the engine without significant modifications, the only solution is to decrease the amount of fuel to match that air. At least, that's what my pea brain has logically concluded.

At idle up through about half throttle, the engine sounds pretty good and doesn't smoke too much. It's when you open 'er up that she starts to run a bit rough and belch smoke. The thing is, it doesn't sound like it's skipping. I fly model airplanes, and it sounds to me like it's fat, too rich. The pump's pouring in more fuel than the engine can draw air for...
