help with M radiator/steering shaft!!

Hello and thanks in advance...I need to remove the radiator from my 1945 M to fix a leak or two, so far this is what Ive done......removed hood and grill, removed large plug from front of steering shaft, removed the cotter pin and nut which was behind the plug, near steering wheel, loosened the set screws on a slip collar and slipped the collar forward......Now what?? does the steering shaft just pull backwards?? Doesnt seem to want to do that. Does it unscrew?? Tried alittle but didnt know how much force to use. Also, where the guages are mounted is what looks to be where a bearing is, however, I have no bearing there(or not much), the shaft thru that area is completely loose and I can move the shaft all around, like 1/2" all direcetions, am I missing something there?? HELP!!
