I agree with the consensus of the folks who posted before me. While I don't have the factory parts book in front of me, I don't recall ever seeing a listing for replacement 8V electrical equipment...which might be because it wasn't a factory option. Ever have a vehicle with a voltmeter? On a properly-charging 12V system, it will maintain the battery at a charge of approximately 13.8 volts. Likewise, on a nominally 6V system, the generator--which is what the 400 had originally--will maintain the battery at a charge approaching 8 volts. So to make it an 8V system--if everything else is operating properly--all you have to do is drop in an 8V battery. Of course, for good measure, you COULD take the cover off the voltage regulator and tweak the peak output where the regulator cuts out...but most folks didn't bother. Of course, since I don't know everything about everything, I COULD be wrong...ask my wife.
