All
I have a 1955 IH 400 row crop that has an 8 Volt electrical system from the factory. Is this uncommon, I never hear anyone talk about Factory 8 Volt. Is it only this year? Insight, comments appreciated.
Thanks,
Bill

Bill, do you have a operators manual? If not I looked in ours and it says the electrical system of the tractor is a six volt system. But however the combination rear light and tail light uses a 6-8volt-32 candlepower lamp. Also the instrument lamp uses a 6-8 volt 2 candle power lamp. If this helps.

Is there anyplace that carries those 6v instrument lamps? When I did the 300 I found a bulb that would fit the socket and went to several auto parts stores and told them I need a 6v light with this base, and whaddaya know, they get me a 12v light. I won't mention that the lovely people who did this to me work at autozone and advance auto.

yeah we've got 2, didn't think they'd stock something like that though. Also never thought to ask.

I agree with the consensus of the folks who posted before me. While I don't have the factory parts book in front of me, I don't recall ever seeing a listing for replacement 8V electrical equipment...which might be because it wasn't a factory option.

Ever have a vehicle with a voltmeter? On a properly-charging 12V system, it will maintain the battery at a charge of approximately 13.8 volts. Likewise, on a nominally 6V system, the generator--which is what the 400 had originally--will maintain the battery at a charge approaching 8 volts. So to make it an 8V system--if everything else is operating properly--all you have to do is drop in an 8V battery. Of course, for good measure, you COULD take the cover off the voltage regulator and tweak the peak output where the regulator cuts out...but most folks didn't bother.

Of course, since I don't know everything about everything, I COULD be wrong...ask my wife.

How do you know--As the post below says, all you have to do is put in an 8 volt battery, generator is adjustable. There were no factory 8 volts from IH.

Are you sure that it is a complete 8 volt system. More than likely someone just put an 8 volt battery in a 6 volt system. This is commonlly done in an attempt to give the starter more cranking power.

Hold the phone! Look on the little builders plate on the generator. It is on the side by where the wires hook up. If it is a Delco "it should be" there is a little oval plate. On there it will say 6V or 8v or 12V. can also say 6 volt or 8 volt or 12 volt. Take a look. Jeff
