please help..can't get a MD started!

a friend of mine has a MD and it takes about a half hour to get it started on gas. when he gets it going it runs fine, switches over to diesel fine and then he shuts it down, then it takes forever to start again. do you have to switch it back to gas before shutting down? if you do how? i know this was dicussed before a couple of weeks ago but i can't find the discussion.
