The A like so many other tractors of that vintage has straight cut gears and they are by nature very noisy. In later years everybody went to bevel cut gears which are quiet. This is why you can't shift on the go with out grinding gears. The use of expensive other oil/grease is a waist of money in this case.

However since you say your trasmission was dry when you first checked it you might have someone who is knowledgable about an A to listen to yours
