Hugh McKay should answer this. The planter is probably ground drive, whereas the fertilizer probably drives off the axle shafts or transmission. You will may need to use some type of an opener, unless you simply want to dribble it on the ground. This would work ok for nitrogen and possibly potassium, but phosphorus works best if you get it down by the roots.
