You must pull the tranny cover, or work though the PTO opening to get the pinion bearing cage out. The Bull gear must be removed from the axle. The flange you see on the outside, is part of the pinion cage. It can't be easily removed because the bull gear runs in a slot in the pinion cage to mesh with the pinion gear. Therefore the bull gear blocks removal.
