I'm reworking the disc brakes on a SM. The seals and outter bearing need replacing on the Pinon Shaft. After pulling cover and discs off it looks as though there are two plates that set against the tranny housing. Do these plates or plate come off? and then can I simply pull out the splined shaft and replace the bearing and seals? OR not as easy, do I need to pull the tranny cover and work it that way? I'v been in and out of the tranny on a SM before, I just need a jump start!

You must pull the tranny cover, or work though the PTO opening to get the pinion bearing cage out. The Bull gear must be removed from the axle. The flange you see on the outside, is part of the pinion cage. It can't be easily removed because the bull gear runs in a slot in the pinion cage to mesh with the pinion gear. Therefore the bull gear blocks removal.

The brake plate and bearing retainer, this is the plate inside clutch disc is next to, neads removed. It has a seal and o ring.Pry plate out or
screw slide hammer in threaded hole in end of pinion shaft then shaft and plate will come out togather.Pinion bearing will come out with shaft.
On a SM you can go this far without disturbing
bull gear

Sounds a easier. By your and Haas's comments, do I understand the Pinon Bearing Cage is different on a M and SM? Thanks for all of the good info.

When IH started using disc brakes some late M's have them. They redesigned bull pinion bearing cage also bull pinion and bearing. The plate I told you to remove to get pinion shaft out is the bearing retainer that holds bull pinion shaft in. The bull pinion bearing cage is bolted behind this plate you can see bolts after plate is removed. If you have to remove the bearing cage you have to remove the bull gear first. But if you just need to replace the pinion shaft bearing you can remove it as stated earlier. Hope this is not to confusing.

Not confusing at all. In fact it's very clear! Thanks for the help.
