They put a small tag on the patterns to denote the day that the piece was cast. On some later castins, they even put a small dial to tell you which shift it was cast on. Trivia fact, next time you've got some time to kill in a porta-potty, a lot of them have the same kind of casting dates and times for the plastic parts.
