The retaining plate is made in mutiple pieces so thats ok. Are you sure you got the bolts across the front and BACK. You may need to remove the half-moon inspection plate from the lower half of the bell housing to see them. If you have all the bolts out try tapping a stiff puddy knife in between the block and the pan it should come you but you may have to work all the way around it with the puddy knife. Also be sure to put sealer on the bolt threads when you put it back because some of them go through and will drip oil.
