shifting problems with 350D

I just bought a 58 350D and I need some help from you guys that know these tractors 100 times as well as I do. That means most of you out there. The shifter seems loose and I can find 4th and 5th alright but 1st and reverse are almost impossible to get to. Is this a shifter fork problem or what? I have the manuals coming but not here yet. The tractor runs well but steering is loose. It has a wide front with power steering. I know I will have to rebuild that. This is my 1st tractor and I feel like a kid with it. thanks Jerry
