The original handles for the hydraulic controls on the 300U had a 60 degree bend in them and were designed to wrap back up over the top of the control valve. A lot of these tractors now have handles which point forward, and if you think about it you'll see how this reverses things so that raising the handle does the opposite of what was originally intended.

The Fast Hitch is supposed to go up when the valve handle rotates in the same direction as the tractor tires do when it is moving forward - if things don't work this way, the hoses are reversed. This is important if you want the cross-check valve (which may or may not still be present on your tractor) to work properly (without it, the hitch is very unlikely to hold a heavy load up for any period of time). The cross-check valve is a rectangular block about an inch thick which bolts onto the bottom of the Fast Hitch control valve; the hoses going to the hitch cylinder should be coming out of this block.
