HOLD THE PHONE!!! There is a 50-50 chance that your description is correct. The mechanic must ALSO verify that #1 cylinder is coming up on compression, not exhaust. Either put your thumb in the #1 spark plug hole and have someone hand crank until you feel compression or watch the rocker arms as you crank, #1 intake will open & close then with 1/2 revolution of the crank you should be at TDC (top dead center). Locate the TDC mark on the front pulley and align it with the pointer. Now you can look at the distributor rotor to see which wire goes where. From the operator's position, # 1 is usually around the 2 o'clock position. PS: the points should be set to just begin to open as the TDC mark passes the pointer. Easy, isn't it??
