Gene may well be correct, as he almost always is. But, you point the rotor to #1 before the coupling trips, it may be slighly past afterwards, perhaps not as far as yours is. Install the mag with the top against the block after you have set #1 on TDC, make one complete revolution until the timing mark on the flywheel lines up with the mark on the cast piece behind the oil pan. Pull the top of the mag out until the coupling trips. Don't know if you mean you can't find the mark on the flywheel, or if it is misalinged. The mark is hard to see, but it is there.
