I agree, the hard starting story comes from people who don't have time to hold the glow plug in a for a minute before cranking it over. I have never heard about the cracked heads story. The bad rear ends have been well documented but that was limited to the early models, and nearly all have been replaced. If it hasn't broke in the last 45 years there is a good chance its OK.
