detergent oil??

Some people have told me not to use detergent oil because it will ruin the seals and the gaskets in the engine. Is this true?? Or can I use it? What oil do some of you guys recomend to use? (1944 M). Is there any other ways to help put a little bit of hp's back into the engine since it is a '44 model tractor. It runs fine and doesn't seem to have a signifigant ammount of power loss but I was just wondering what small things might help. Full tune up recomended? Also doesn't the ole M hold 8 quarts of oil? Thanks guys again!
