Its a crank handle to raise and low the cutting height of the brush hog. Some have a hydraulic cylinder to do this. Also is seems like the pull type brush hogs throw more trash forward, It might be that the opening is larger. I added a some short bits of chain to act as deflectors. I don't have much problem with tight corners, my mower has a long hitch and thus a long drive shaft = less angle on the cornering. Also with a pull type mower, reverse is nearly impossible. Good luck and be careful - i.e. no kids or anamals around.
