Ammeter on IH 424

my 67 424 diesel had idiot lights for oil pressure and charging. The temp gauge was rusted out completely. I fabricated a new dash panel and cut three holes for a temp gauge, an oil press. gauge and a ammeter. The temp and oil press. work great; but how do I wire the amp meter? My wiring diagram only shows the light. On other diagrams it looks like it is in line somewhere in the charging circuit but putting it there on my tractor doesn't seem to work. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
