Couldn't wait to get home, had my wife run the experiment. After half an hour of idling the coolant had expanded enough that it was overflowing and she put the cap back on. At that point the candy thermometer said 160, while the gauge said 210. She didn't watch it close enough to say when the thermostat opened. I think I'll pull the gauge and test it against the thermometer on the kitchen stove. Sam C.
