Jim - Sounds like an ignition problem to me. What may be happening is the coil output voltage drops off as the coil warms up in use. It'll have enough voltage to fire the plugs while starting up cold. However once it gets hot the coil can still fire the plugs when the battery is charging, but won't fire 'em under the low voltage system as when cranking. Most likely it's the coil itself. However it could also possibly be a failing condenser, badly worn/adjusted points. Dirty plugs/plugs gapped too wide could aggravate the situation. One way to verify is try pull starting the tractor when it's hot. If it fires right up (one or two crank revolutions), it's ignition. However if the crank must spin many revolutions before it fires or it won't fire at all, then suspect a fuel problem Incidentally it's unlikely to be vapor lock - gravity fuel systems are pretty much immune to that problem.

The answer to our needs materialized in the form of a '44 Farmall A, complete with cultivators, discs, single plow, a 5ft.Woods belly mower and one, mounted spare 9.00x24 rear wheel.
