Are you using a LONG (12 incher) feeler gauge that goes the full length of the piston? Your clearance will be measured at the skirt, perpendicular (90º) to the piston pin. Most pistions have more clearance at the top where the rings are. Runing clearance is usually measured at the piston skirt. You perhaps should stop at a local engine rebuilder and have them show you how to properly measure piston clearance.
