Farmall 504 electrical

Well the other day I went to move some rounds bales and the battery was dead on the 504. Didn't think much about it, thought maybe the boy left the lights on. Well today in the heavy rain (tractor was sitting all by itself everything turned off) The lights came on. I went over and disconnected the lights and they dimmed but didn't go out. Then a small amount steam started to come up around the steering column. Not sure what was frying, all I could hear was the sizzling. Any ideas on what it may be? One of the previous owners did some "rewiring" w/the lighting system that I changed back to the way it is supose to be. Couldn't figure out why they changed it, all the parts they bypassed work......
