240U Starter Problem

I think I screwed up. I started my 240U last weekend, after it had been sitting all winter. It did not want to fire, so I ran the battery down cranking. I put the charger on for a while, but got impatient and set the charger to boost. I have a 6V starter, 6V generator cranked up to 12 volts, 12V coil, and a 12V negative ground battery. I got the tractor started, but it took a lot of cranking. I ran it around the yard a few time, in between letting it idle, to get the old gal loosened up and the battery charged. I then put it back in the garage and let it sit until this weekend. When I went to start it this weekend, it turned a couple times and then the started just quit. I put the charger on the battery, thinking it ws low. The needle on the charger went to max and the overload circuit kicked out. I tried a second battery charger, which did the same thing. I removed the battery, and hooked up the charger to the battery removed from the tractor, and it shows charged and does not kick out the overload. This tells me that I must have a dead short somewhere in the electrical on the tractor. Could I have overheated the 6V starter from cranking too much last weekend and shorted it out? Is the symptom I am seeing what typically happens when you overheat the starter? If not, what else did I screw up. I just had the starter overhauled last year, and it has very few starts on it. Could I have damaged anything in the charging system? Did I lose polarity in my generator? Help!
