Here in central Iowa chisel plows are almost a thing of the past. The primary tool for tillage around here is the disc ripper and these are usually put in as deep as the four wheeler can handle. I would guess 12 inches minimum. The theory is that they fight compaction caused by the oversized grain carts and combines and etc. If the soil is dry they might even work but if wet they are ineffective. They do make the monster tractors bellow most satifactorily though so you think your accomplishing something. Chisels and disc chisels are about give-aways around here now-a-days. I used to run mine about 4 to 6 inches. WM
