Chisel plows - problems with recent debates...

I was just informed that in some areas of the country chisel plows are used to work the soil 12" deep! Well, here in North Dakota (at least SW) you don't go that deep unless you want rocks! We use a chisel plow with 12" sweeps on it to work the ground anywhere from 4" to maybe 6 or 8" deep, depending on whether we are summer fallowing or preparing a seed bed. I would venture to guess that with the W9 they were around 5 or 6 inches deep. Another debate has been with baler vs tractor size. Around here we can't really go fast enough to plug a baler - the windrows just aren't all that big. So we run around 6 mph, while others have to go slow so that the windrow will feed into the baler. I believe the speed we run could be the cause for needing a higher HP tractor on the baler. I know I certainly wouldn't want less than 90 horse on any big round baler... Hopefully this clears some things up - please add discussion as to what your baling conditions are, what you use a chisel plow for, etc.
