Two suggestions: 1. Drop a cow magnet in the tank, it'll collect a lot of the rust and metal filings. 2. Remove sediment bowl assembly from tank. Find a short piece of tubing (I used a piece of automobile radio antenna) which will force fit into the inlet, (you may have to drill inlet slightly larger) and insert it in to inlet. Reinstall the filter unit. Length of tube should be such that it raises actual intake point half an inch or so above the floor of the tank. You loose a little capacity this way, but dirt tends to stay on floor of tank, and not get into filter. At some time, you will want to clean dirt out of bottom of tank by siphoning or whatever. DON'T USE A SHOP-VAC!!!!!!!!
