My new cub did just that. I checked it out, and the points were burned up. I looked closer, and it had very cold plugs. Then I looked closer and found the coil wire was the carbon resistor type, and the coil was a 12 volt coil, but it said right on it, "use with external resistor" and there was no resistor. This cub is 12 volt. The coil was cracked from overheating. I changed the points, condensor, plugs, coil wire, coil, and added a resistor and it runs like a new tractor, and starts instantly. I suggest looking at all the ignition components.
