You can buy that brush-on rubber stuff, the kind you dip your tool handles in, at NAPA or Lowe's. I used it to refurbish my SC steering wheel and it really looks great, easy to apply, and would probably be easier to paint on than cutting and gluing down a rubber mat. Would serve the same non-slip, water resistant purpose. Comes in several colors, also.
