Being that the kerosene/distillate was still an option thru the 350 that would explain the pet cocks. You were supposed to drain the oil down to the lower level (distillate floats on oil) and then fill to top level with clean oil. I suppose they put the dipstick on too for the gas engine and to make it quick to check.

Those are the ideas that I can come up with.
