diesel engine oil

I have a 1960 International B-275 diesel tractor,can I use 15W-40 oil in it or should I use straight 30 wt. oil in it?Ive been told different opinions which make me wonder is there a science to this or what?Is it personal preference?Will I damage my expensive equipment if I use 15W-40? Help please!!!!! Greg
