Hugh - The same pull rod style starter switch is used on all later Farmall tractors - and on other brands of tractors too. I think those plastic shields are provided inside the switch to prevent shorting of the movable contact bar as the switch wears...but I'm not certain. One thing is certain however: If the starter switch develops an internal short, the whole switch can heat up red hot in a manner of a few seconds after connecting the battery (been there, done that!) BTW a new switch is cheap (I got one a few weeks ago for <$10 at my local alternator shop). My recommendation would be to simply replace yours with a new one! ...Bob M
