Steel shifter knob again - Guy Fay??

Both of my W-9's are 1946 models. The one with steel shifter is 19077 and the other one with rubber knob is 22270. So I assume they switched sometime in 1946? Both tractors have that yellow paint on them. Both of my 1942 H's (101816 and 101821) had rubber knobs and I was told the steel was used in 1942 and 1943. Guess I'm just confused, hoping you could shed some light on the subject. Thanks!
