Here is a guess, but it could be totally wrong. What you describe sounds like the brake was not able to fully disengage. This can be caused by the brake pedal hanging up due to something rubbing against the brake pedal, or something like that (Check to see if you have hydraulic hoses against the brake pedal). If the brake cannot fully disengage, the brake band will drag on the drum. Over a long period of operation (4 hours like you describe) this can heat up considerably. The heat will migrate through the drum to the seal and destroy the seal, thus allowing the oil to come out and make contact with the hot drum which created the smoke.
