mwk - I'd be cautious of adding any kind of solvent to the oil to clean out the crankcase on account of the risk of breaking loose a chunk of crud and the crud then clogs a lube line somewhere. Besides, my experience has been most of the sludge will be under the rocker cover, tappet cover and in the governor. Unless the motor has been horribly abused, the crankcase itself - with the exception of the bottom of the pan - will remain surprisingly clean. While you've got the pan off, suggest removing the oil pump pickup float and thoroughly cleaning the float screen. Also check to see that the float's not waterlogged (actually filled with oil) so it doesn't float. I've opened a couple motors and found floats with pinholes and bad solder joints - they probably never floated even when brand new. Finally check the oil pump cover capscrews for tightness while you are down there. Good luck!
