clean crankcase?

I am about to change oil in Dad's C and would like to drop the pan to clean out goop in there (if there is any). Before I do this is there any thing that I could mix with the oil and run for a little while in order to clean the engine crank case. I am more curious than anything else about what is inside of the oil pan. While it is off, is there any thing that I could look for from the bottom of the pistons/crankshaft that would indicate a future problem? Thanks for your help. -- Martin
